Removing the Cigarette Lighter From a Porsche Boxster Experience

When I bought my 1997 Porsche Boxster 986 (for the low, low price of $6,000. That’s right.) there were a few things that needed to change. One that needed immediate attention was the European lighter Porsche stuck in it.

European lighters are a little bit fatter than American lighters. This means that you don’t always get a solid connection for your plugs. As someone that uses a dash camera, but doesn’t have it hardwired, this is a bad thing. Once in a while I would hit a bump and moments later the camera would turn off. It was annoying as hell. I was always driving with one eye on the road and one of the camera. No good. So I set off to change the the beast out and get back to being confident that my camera was recording.

While I was initially surprised that the original lighter would still be in this 19 year old car, I wasn’t scared of replacing it myself. I looked over the internet to find a walkthrough or video of someone changing out the lighter, but I couldn’t find anything. I finally found one or two small comments in a forum that phrased the switch as simple as “unplug the battery, pull the lighter out, pop the lighter case out, plug in the new one.” It seemed extremely easy. So with that advice I took to it.

Since no one else had made a video about it, I decided to document the easy switch so others could see just how easy it is to do. As a matter of fact, it ended up being so easy that my video ended up being one of the longest I’ve ever made.

Check it out!:

As you can see, it was almost too easy. I’m worried it won’t be secure. After all, I only had to slam it into the table for about 5 minutes before it came loose. That’s 5 minutes quicker than I feel comfortable with. 10 minutes of hitting? Well, it gave it a good shot. But only 5? Disgraceful.

The specialty tools in the video were purchased at PelicanPart.com, however they don’t sell an American sized lighter. You need to head over to SunCoastParts.com to pick one of those up.
